BPY Seventh Graders ‘Energetically’ Make Ice Cream

BPY seventh graders have been learning all about energy; exploring what energy is, how energy is transformed and the way that the exchange of energy fuels our earth.

One highlight from the unit was their work with dry ice, during which they learned how carbon dioxide directly sublimates into a gas from a solid form. Watching the abundant mist and fog created by the simple combination of solid carbon dioxide and water was breathtaking! The entire unit was summarized through the making of ice cream. Using a simple process of zip lock bags, milk, sugar, salt and a whole lot of shaking, the students learned how the chemical interactions between salt and ice result in a cold enough temperature for milky/sugary liquids to freeze into delicious ice cream in merely eight minutes! Yum!
