(Courtesy of Daughters of Miriam) Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute (DMC) was recognized as one of a select group of nursing homes ranked on the inaugural list of Newsweek’s “Best Nursing Homes 2020,” which was released in November. Analyzing data from over 15,000 nursing homes in the United States, the list recognizes 406 nursing homes across the country. DMC was ranked the #3 nursing home in New Jersey out of the 38 in the state that made the list and is #1 in northern New Jersey.
Newsweek’s list includes nursing homes with a capacity of at least 150 certified beds in 20 states with the highest population density and includes California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and others. The scores for these nursing homes were then calculated using two data sources: (1) a Reputation Survey in which 46,000 medical experts were invited to participate, and (2) nursing home performance data from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Over 400 nursing homes met the assigned threshold score and were included in the Best Nursing Homes rankings for that state.
Newsweek’s Reputation Survey was distributed to registered nurses, nursing home managers and administrators, licensed practical nurses/licensed vocation nurses, nursing assistants, therapists and physicians throughout the United States. This Reputation Survey accounted for 15% of the overall score of the analysis.
The additional 85% of the ranking score came from key performance indicators on staffing, quality measures and health inspections provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services. The data was derived from three main sources: the Minimum Data Set (MDS), which is a standardized assessment tool that measures the health status of nursing home residents; the CMS health inspection database; and Medicare claims data. The four most recent quarters for which data was available were used to determine these ratings so that they would be as current as possible. According to Newsweek, the overall rating was the weighted average of the overall performance score and the reputation score together. All nursing homes that received a threshold score in each performance data domain were then ranked in their state.
