The Storm welcomed the Kushner Cobras into Teaneck on Sunday, December 8, for a JV/varsity hockey showdown at the Weather Center. JV was up first and determined to score a second win against the Cobras this season after losing to them in a heartbreaking triple overtime in last season’s championship game. Kushner was up 1-0 at the end of one, but whatever Coach Tzvika Poleyeff said to the players in the locker room during intermission must have gotten through. The Storm came out firing on all cylinders and got the game tying goal via great stick-handling from sophomore Joey Zelig. Zelig was able to take the ball around the net and beat the Kushner goaltender at the near post. Period three started with a Cobra power play but TABC was able to kill the penalty, permanently shifting the momentum in their favor. Later on in the period, the Cobras failed to clear out of their zone and sophomore Ezra Becker found himself at the right place at the right time to tap home the game winner, giving the Storm the narrow victory to remain undefeated.
Just like their JV counterparts, the varsity team got off to a slow start, finding themselves down 2-0 after one period. The Storm decided to make a goaltending change, bringing in junior Jonah Elzweig. Elzweig was a brick wall all day, stopping shot after shot and motivating the Storm attack going the other way. Junior Zach Levy had a nice backhander goal to pull the Storm within one and senior Ben Englander tied the game a few moments later, rattling the Cobras and sending the home crowd into pandemonium. It was all tied up heading into the final frame, but senior Jonah Gerson scored the game winning goal early on in the period, sniping it in the far post. Senior Aaron Teitelbaum put the game out of reach with an insurance goal a minute later to seal varsity’s biggest win of the season so far.
