Imagine that you are going to get a cup of water from the sink, but as you turn on the faucet, nothing comes out. Now imagine that this was the case every single day. If you lived in South Sudan, it would be your everyday life. You actually wouldn’t even have a sink. After reading “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, we, as sixth graders, realized that water scarcity is a real problem in places such as South Sudan.
South Sudanese girls and women walk miles every day to get water for their families. This water is collected from ponds which are dirty and muddy. Through our reading, we have come across a wonderful organization: Water for South Sudan. This organization, started by Salva Dut, the main character in the book, constructs water pumps in many Sudanese villages. These pumps are providing fresh, clean water for the residents and are saving lives every day.
We feel that the people of South Sudan deserve to drink clean, unpolluted water. Our goal is to raise awareness about the issue of water scarcity in their country. We hope to be able to help many people, but we can’t do it alone. If you are interested in helping, then please check out their website, WaterforSouthSudan.org and you can donate through our team page https://www.classy.org/team/271530. Together, we can help people in the world have access to fresh water.
