The annual Moriah Reads program culminated with middle school students and staff participating in a series of special activities and events. Chanukah, a time to treasure the light each of us has in our beings, was the perfect time of year to present and study this unit. This interdisciplinary unit was designed as a way to bring all three middle school grades and staff together through reading and discussing the same novel. This year’s selection, “March: Book One” by John Lewis, focused on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s.
The day of learning included a variety of multidisciplinary workshops, experiments and presentations. Among them were classes by Marvel Comics author and long-time educator, Alan Zelenetz, on the process of creating and publishing a graphic novel; Rabbi Alter’s shiur on the Torah’s perspective on racism; Mrs. Boim’s class on picture books and activism…. just to name a few! Students participated in a STEM activity, watched their teachers perform a Dr. Seuss skit and spent the afternoon immersed in learning.
