Yeshivat Noam’s eighth graders presented powerful stories of survival at the “Living Museum.” It was a meaningful and memorable night to remember the Shoah. An impressive program with special projects and moving presentations were shared via Zoom with parents and grandparents to commemorate this important day.
One of the amazing stories was shared by Gedaliah Dimbert. His project focused on the life of Ben Sukiennink, the father of a family friend in Kansas. Sukiennink survived the war in his small community in Poland. As the war was ending and the Russian army was getting closer, the Nazis forced the Jews in the shtetl into the synagogue and set it on fire. After being saved by Russian soldiers, he and his surviving family moved to Russia, back to Poland, and then to Switzerland before settling in Kansas. Out of his 17 siblings, Sukiennink was one of only four who survived.
Under the direction of social studies teacher and Holocaust Education Coordinator Rabbi Jeremy Hellman, the students did an amazing job sharing survival stories.
