Everyone has something that he has always been curious about but which he has never had the time to pursue. Enter TABC’s Capstone, a project which seniors are assigned to complete as part of their graduation requirements. What is novel about this type of project is that it entails not merely an exploration of a topic but an application of the knowledge one has gained. In a Capstone project, one goes beyond mere research to ask, “What real-world purpose can my research serve?” A real world problem may be solved or a question may be answered. By its completion, some students even end up inventing something new! To get a preview of some exciting possibilities that might await them next year, Dr. Master and the other senior English teachers, Mrs. Milch, Mrs. Goldberg and Mr. McGoldrick, arranged a Zoom presentation for the current juniors (in lieu of the evening originally planned pre-pandemic, that would have featured all of the senior Capstones), that included just a few of this year’s senior Capstone Projects. Last Wednesday, June 3, graduating seniors Akiva Prager, Yehuda Mirwis, Ari Needle, Bear Weitz and Yoni Bierig presented their Capstones, each one illustrating the student’s individual thoughts in a unique interpretation of the assignment, from a Ted-style talk about how to deliver a speech to various slideshows that showcased current questions and answers about vaping, paying professional athletes, the makings of a great movie and the best use of the power play strategy in hockey. The emphasis throughout was on answering an essential question and coming up with a solution. The key to the Capstone success is a student’s ability to creatively pursue a topic of his choice.
