Like many children in the Englewood community, Rebecca Isak, a rising sixth grader at The Moriah School, did not attend sleepaway camp this summer. Camp Nesher made a decision to close for the 2020 season, but Rebecca wanted to incorporate one of her favorite elements of camp to her stay-at-home summer. Launched on June 19, Rebecca created “Quarantine Canteen,” and ever since, Friday afternoons at the canteen have become a much-anticipated event for the neighborhood children and their families. They bike, walk and drive over to Rebecca’s house from all over the area, masked of course, and line up to buy the classic camp canteen favorites such as Snapple, strawberry shortcake bars, sour sticks and Tradition soup, each for $2 dollars.

In honor of her upcoming bat mitzvah, Rebecca is giving all of the proceeds to the Englewood Health Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to supply books for parents to read to their babies in the NICU and books for the siblings of babies who are in the NICU. Having spent some time in the NICU as a newborn, Rebecca thought this would be a sweet way to pay it forward.

Reflecting on her chesed initiative, Rebecca described how she is happy to be able to recreate an experience that “gives people a part of the summer they really enjoy.”
