Seniors in both of Cary Reichardt’s introductory conomics classes began a new project last week in culmination of their unit on economic systems. The students were tasked with analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of different systems in the process of designing an “ideal economy” and were then presented with several scenarios which asked them to put what they learned into action. One such scenario was being shipwrecked on an island after a global disaster. The students were tasked with creating an entirely new society. While working in teams of four, the students engaged in several problem-solving activities focused on leading questions that are central to the organization of an ideal economy. Each group was also responsible for mapping out the resources and land distribution on their island. Once all the systems have been established, they will share their findings with the class. In addition, each student will be completing an individual evaluation of their island economy.
