After learning the three states of matter, second graders at Westchester Torah Academy enjoyed a fun experiment in which they explored how density affects each state. By adding oil and colored water to a bottle, they observed that oil is less dense than water, and therefore, it floats on top. When they added a tablet of Alka Seltzer to the bottle, they were able to observe what happens when bubbles of carbon dioxide combine with the water—it became less dense than the oil and bubbled to the top just like a real lava lamp!
