The Idea School ushered in Chanukah with a special yom iyun program, learning about Chanukah from different angles and using the tefillah “Al Hanissim.” Students explored the Hellenistic world, the threat of assimilation into Greek life and the American government’s acknowledgment of our holiday. They discussed a number of topics in various sessions including which values we would fight to protect, religious rights being threatened in Europe today, modern-day Maccabees such as MLK, RBG and Malala, and what it means to fight for justice. The day wouldn’t have been complete without sufganiyot, music and the chance to decorate—and create. Students ended the day with a Maker Challenge, bringing together their learning in a door decoration or other art form. Many noted that there’s so much darkness around us because of COVID, Chanukah reminds us to bring the light.
