Some teenagers see the first serious snowfall of the season and think “snow day!” Others think of snowballs, snow forts, sledding or snowmen. Sarah Getraer of Highland Park, a senior at Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School in Livingston, saw the significant accumulation of snow on Thursday morning, December 17; knew that in the evening her family would celebrate the eighth night of Chanukah; and decided to make a giant menorah on their front lawn.

Sarah’s resulting work of art probably topped the size and creativity of most other chanukiot in town. And her dad’s proud post on Facebook of the snow menorah attracted over 300 likes and dozens of admiring comments.

Sarah said: “I see tons of people walk by our house, since we’re located near Donaldson Park. I wanted to do something public, to share Chanukah with everyone. I thought it was especially worthwhile this year, with all the limits on public gatherings.”

Her mom, Jean, commented: “Sarah worked a long time on this and was very meticulous, even using tools to make sure all the candle holders were even. I was thrilled with how beautiful the snow menorah was when it was all lit up and in watching people admire it.”
