The Drink Up Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week: Max Schachter

The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize Max Schachter as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The Yeshivat Noam basketball star helped lead last year’s seventh grade team to an undefeated season and a trip to the semi-finals, before their season was cut short. Max’s seventh grade coach Rabbi Yosef Weinberger told The Jewish Link, “Max is every coach’s dream. A super-talented player that not only creates his own opportunities but also makes everyone around him better. When a great scorer, like Max, knows when and how to find the open teammate, it is nearly impossible to defend. He leads by example with his passion and energy on both ends of the court. I can say firsthand that he has earned the respect of his teammates, opposing players, coaches and refs across the league.”

Max, yasher koach on being recognized as Sportstar of the Week. Who is your role model and why?

My older brother, Jonah. We play basketball, hockey, golf and tennis together all the time. He never takes it easy on me and always tells me that playing against people that are better than I am will make me better.

What is your favorite sport?

Basketball, because I’ve been playing competitively since I was little, and despite practicing for countless hours, I have never gotten bored.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

That’s easy—my hole in one! 107 yard par 3 at Spook Rock.

Who is your favorite professional athlete?

Damian Lillard. Even though he’s not the tallest on the court, he’s never afraid to shoot, drive to the hoop and take the potential game winning shot. He’s also a great teammate—he scores when the team needs him to and makes all of the other players on his team better.

What is your pregame routine?

Before each game I do some drills on the sidelines with my teammate and friend, Dovid Saks, and check in with my friends on the other team.

What is your earliest sports memory?

Playing ice hockey for the Englewood Eagles when I was 4 years old and basketball for Bergen Broncos.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

Playing TABC Junior hockey, my teammate’s shoe came off in the middle of a play and ended up blocking a shot that would have been the game winner. Afterwards, my team ended up winning the game.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Having my friends over for a swim and barbecue.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Winning the Wayne County Invitational basketball tournament for Camp Morasha and bringing back DJ’s ice cream for my division.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

Having my grandmother call me to tell me she’s going to frame this copy of The Jewish Link!
