RYNJ Hosts Annual Invention Convention

A huge shout out to the RYNJ sixth grade! The RYNJ annual Invention Convention held last week was a resounding success! RYNJ engineers and scientists had an amazing afternoon presenting their prototypes to their friends and the RYNJ Sharks.

In preparation of the convention, RYNJ sixth graders spent a great deal of time reading about famous inventors, studying the historical impact of some extraordinary inventions, and sharing their findings in a wide variety of very creative projects. Additionally, in science, students experienced the scientific process through problem solving and brainstorming experiments. During their library periods, students were introduced to the research process and how to explore online sites. In English they learned how to paraphrase and create a small research report and in technology, the children were exposed to the many facets of advertising. These ideas were applied to their own PowerPoint slide shows. All the while, RYNJ science teachers were emphasizing the numerous steps involved in invention, and the collaborative skills inherent in such an extensive interdisciplinary unit.

After weeks of busily working on their unique display boards and testing their prototypes, students teamed together to review the scientific process one last time. When their tests were complete, they gathered again, reflected on the process and made tweaks wherever necessary.

As a culminating event, students convened for a true convention. Prototypes and display boards were set up, and everyone had their chance to “pitch” their unique product to the prestigious RYNJ sharks.

Research has shown that the invention process encourages creativity, enhances self image, develops the essential skills of logical thinking, promotes intellectual risk-taking and expands communication skills. RYNJ saw tremendous growth in all of these areas throughout the time students were immersed in this STEM unit.
