Students and faculty at Ma’ayanot commemorated Yom Hazikaron together as a school community in solidarity with Jews around the world. On this solemn day, we remembered the men and women who lost their lives in defense of Medinat Yisrael as well as all those who were killed in terrorist attacks. To mark the occasion, the Ma’ayanot Yamim Committee designed a meaningful virtual tekes (ceremony) lighting candles for those that we have lost and highlighting the stories of both soldiers and victims of terror. All students were moved by the documentary “Beneath the Helmet: From High School to the Home Front.” The film brought a real life appreciation of the courage and the sacrifice of all who serve in the IDF, and highlighted the stories of five young Israeli high school graduates who draft into the Israeli army to defend their country. It follows how they adjust, at the age of 18, to their training, being away from home, family and friends. Students were inspired and moved by their demanding journey, along with interviews with their families and felt a deep appreciation for who they are and who they want to be. The program was both heartwarming and eye opening for students, who are all close in age to most of the chayalim and chayalot and can appreciate their sacrifice and sense of duty to their country, our country, to Am and Eretz Yisrael.
