(Courtesy of Soroka Medical Center)As a response to the dire situation in Israel, American Friends of Soroka Medical Center (AFSMC) launched an immediate Emergency Response Fund to support urgent care for the people of Israel. Through the volatile situation that is currently unfolding across the nation, Soroka is on high alert for any eventuality.
The Negev is Israel’s fastest growing and most diverse region, with over 1.2 million residents, including over 400,000 children, in an area that comprises 60% of Israel’s land. Soroka is the only major hospital serving the entire population of southern Israel, including IDF soldiers operating in the nearby Gaza strip. Soroka provides healthcare excellence to all, regardless of their ethnic background, religion, or gender.
The critical importance of Soroka for Israel was once again in evidence this week with new surges of missile attacks from Gaza. Staff braced and prepared for incoming casualties and relocated our most vulnerable units into temporary sheltered facilities where they continue to operate while under attack. For example, The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit needed to be relocated to a protected area to enable continued care for the precious babies. Soroka has also opened an emergency command center and has put all critical staff on stand-by. Israel’s busiest emergency department is ready to treat all patients with physical and psychological trauma.
Soroka Medical Center is at the forefront of treating civilians and the military during these difficult and challenging times. Life and death situations relentlessly present themselves, and Soroka continues to rise to the occasion. Now Soroka is working around the clock to meet the challenges of caring for Israel’s wounded.

Hillel Caplan, AFSMC’s treasurer and a member of the board, who is also a long-time resident of Teaneck said: “Having been involved with Soroka Medical Center for several years, and having visited the hospital multiple times, I deeply appreciate its strategic importance to the residents of the Negev, and to the IDF. It is truly on the front line in situations like the one that Israel faces now.”
