Readers are free to disagree with “A Modest Proposal for LGBTQ Jews” (April 22, 2021). If you believe Rabbi Appelbaum’s position is untenable, raise your legitimate concerns—but why the need for ridicule and sarcasm (and more than a little sanctimony)?
Yes, Torah prohibitions are undeniable: However, somewhere on the spectrum of Orthodox Judaism are religious leaders who know that avoidance is not an option. You can deny the complexity of a growing community that identifies as both Jewishly observant and LGBTQ. Or you can hope, as I do, that our gedolim will continue exploring this theological issue with compassion and empathy.
