Seventh-grade science students at WDS are ending their year with a splat! Well, hopefully not!

After spending the year studying physics—learning about energy, motion and force—students are finishing the year off with the egg-drop challenge. Students, given minimal supplies such as straws, cotton balls and paper plates, and have been tasked with finding a way to prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from the third floor balcony of the WDS castle building.

To start off, students learned about the shape of eggs and how it prevents them from breaking. They tried crushing it in their hands from top to bottom, but to no avail. Students then learned about the important physics concepts they would need to implement to prevent their eggs from breaking, such as increasing the drag as their egg protector falls, and finding a way to soak up the impact when their protector hits the concrete below.

After some research, students have already come up with a plethora of different designs and are spending the coming days building their egg protectors and testing them out so they can be ready for the ultimate challenge on the last day of school! Good luck to them all!
