WDS Participates In CIJE: Drone Olympics

Seventh and eighth graders had the opportunity to participate in an exciting STEM activity on Wednesday, November 3, sponsored and facilitated by CIJE: Drone Olympics. The students were instructed in how to use Scratch to code autonomous drones (drones that are programmed to fly along a route, rather than controlled by a remote control) to fly through an obstacle course. The drones had to fly over and under hurdles, through hoops and between cones. The students had to estimate the exact distances and heights to program their drones to fly, and through trial and error, see how accurate they were. Several of the groups were able to get their drones to fly through the hoop and under the hurdles: the biggest challenge wound up being estimating the distance between the different obstacles! The students were so focused and engaged on their task, the time “flew” by! Thank you so much to CIJE for bringing this opportunity to WDS!
