Happy Birthday Yitz/Irving Tobin

We so enjoyed Yitz (Irving) Tobin’s letter last week (“Very Grateful,” December 23, 2021), celebrating his 97th birthday, and wish him many more, in good health.

When we first moved to Elizabeth as young marrieds we were introduced to Yitz, a lawyer, and he became a frequent Shabbat guest. Unfortunately, we were forced to move out of our rental apartment (don’t ask) and were told about a new 10% mortgage option that we could use to purchase our first home. However, this mortgage came with a significantly higher monthly payment rate, but we had no choice and little funds. We turned to Yitz for advice.

“No way,” he said. “Don’t fall into that trap. You will be at their mercy forever. I will personally give you the money for a conventional mortgage. You can pay me back when you are able.” That’s the kind of person Yitz Tobin was, and still is, no doubt.

We didn’t take Yitz up on his generous offer and managed to save up on our own for our down payment, but we never forgot his kindness. In his letter, Yitz calls himself a very fortunate person. Truly, we were very fortunate to have him as our friend.
