As an introduction to the mystery unit, fifth grade students were introduced to a bank robbery mystery they had to solve. The goal was to expose them to the complexities of crime solving, promote critical thinking skills, and facilitate great discussions within teams. They were each given three clues. Working in teams, they were allowed to orally share their clues with their teammates, but were not initially allowed to show their teammates the clues. After 30 minutes, they were told to pass two clues clockwise to another group. Those clues could be physically looked at by all teammates. They did this two times. The last 10 minutes of class, they were allowed to look at all clues their group had. By the end of the period, every team had solved the case!
