(Courtesy of YIOT) The Young Israel of Teaneck, located in the Country Club section of Teaneck, is excited to announce the return of the Joseph Dresdner Memorial Shabbat with Cantor Netanel Hershtik after a two-year hiatus. This special event will take place on Shabbat Parshat Tazria, Parshat HaChodesh, Rosh Chodesh Nissan, Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2.
Hershtik is the cantor at the Hampton Synagogue, where he leads services from Memorial Day through the chagim. During the rest of the year (and the rest of the week) Hershtik, his wife Tamira and their family are active members of the Young Israel and greater Bergen County community. Hershtik will be joined by his Hampton Synagogue Choir under the leadership of Maestro Itzchak Haimov for the Joseph Dresdner Memorial Shabbat.
Hershtik made his singing debut standing next to his father, Chazan Naftali Hershtik, at the amud of the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem. After serving as an IDF medic and attending Sha’arei Mishpat College of Law and the Tel Aviv Cantorial Institute, Hershtik began his solo career. His frequent appearances in Israel and worldwide include performances with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and many of the world’s leading choirs. He has sung at the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Vienna Konzerthaus, Sydney Opera House and the Casino de Paris, among other leading venues.
Hershtik was the first cantor invited to perform a cantorial concert at the Berliner Philharmonie and at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the first cantor to be featured by EL Al airlines on their infotainment systems. He made his Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 season as the cantor in Na’ama Zisser’s new opera “Mamzer Bastard” and became the first cantor in history to assume an operatic cantorial role. His frequent TV appearances on PBS and the weekly Shabbat and holiday service broadcasts at JBS TV have been viewed by millions. His impressive achievements throughout his career have positioned him as one of the most outstanding cantors in the world today.
The Joseph Dresdner Memorial Shabbat with Cantor Netanel Hershtik has been endowed by Adeena and Yaakov Pultman in memory of Adeena’s father. Mr. Dresdner was an accomplished baal tefilla in his own right and a long-time lover of chazzanut who ensured that he was in attendance at the Young Israel during our Shabbat chazzanut. Rosh Chodesh Nissan this year commemorates 10 years since Mr. Dresdner’s passing.
The Joseph Dresdner Memorial Shabbat with Cantor Netanel Hershtik begins with Kabbalat Shabbat (Mincha at 7 p.m.) on Friday, April 1. It continues Shabbat morning April 2, Rosh Chodesh Nissan, and will feature Hallel and Atah Yatzarta. Kiddush to follow.
The Young Israel of Teaneck, located at 868 Perry Lane, has just completed a major expansion and renovation project in which the main sanctuary has a capacity of over 400 people.
The Young Israel of Teaneck is a member of the National Council of Young Israel as well as the Orthodox Union. It is led by Rabbi Binyamin Krohn. Find out more about the Young Israel at www.yiot.org.
