Ma’ayanot alumna, Talia Kupferman, Class of 2016, presented a workshop to current Ma’ayanot students who were interested in learning more about the genetic counseling career. Talia is currently a student in the genetic counseling program at Sarah Lawrence College, a highly competitive program that accepts only around 20 students a year. Talia’s goal in her presentation was to educate the students on the job of a genetic counselor and to share her personal pathway that led her to pursue this career. The students learned that the job of a genetic counselor involves talking with patients and guiding them through the emotional and difficult aspects of determining the risks of genetic disorders. Talia provided different hypothetical case studies and walked the students through how a genetic counselor would approach each scenario. The students enjoyed hearing Talia’s engaging and informative presentation and were inspired to learn more about this profession.
