Special Games-Special People: A Community Celebration

Tenafly–More than 250 athletes and volunteers from throughout Bergen County recently participated in this year’s annual Chuck Guttenberg Center for the Physically Challenged Special Games-Special People field day event at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades. Opening ceremonies included welcoming remarks from James Thebery, Director of the Division of Disability Services at the Bergen County Department of Human Services.

Every year, Special Games provides an opportunity for children, teens, and adults who are differently-abled to engage in “fun and games,” physical activities, and a positive social experience in a friendly, supportive environment. Our “athletes” take part in soccer, basketball, golf, bowling, obstacle courses, horseshoes, and many other sports and games, where every participant is a winner at every event and receives a ribbon for his or her effort. Family, friends, and volunteers in the community–including Special Services teen volunteers and college volunteers from Hillel of Northern New Jersey–all contribute to the success of the day. In addition to their special ribbons, all participants receive Special Games T-shirts and enjoy a kosher barbeque and great DJ. Always a meaningful day, Special Games brings a sense of accomplishment, inclusion, and community to everyone who participates.
