On Friday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m., at the Cohen home, 418 Rutland Ave, Teaneck, Shaarei Orah will present Prof. Ronnie Perelis. His topic: “Solder, Poet and Prince: the Life and Times of Shmuel HaNagid.” Explore one of the most fascinating figures in Jewish history, Shmuel HaNagid. HaNagid rose from humble origins to be the second in command to the king of Granada in the 11th century. This learned Jew ran the government and led Granada’s Muslim armies against their enemies. HaNagid was also one of the most creative poets of the Hebrew tradition. Come learn about this unique figure and see what he can teach us about our living Sephardic heritage.
Ronnie Perelis is the Chief Rabbi Dr. Isaac Abraham and Jelena (Rachel) Alcalay Assistant Professor of Sephardic Studies at the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies of Yeshiva University.
