On February 23rd, approximately 40 RKYHS sophomore chemistry students participated in a trip to Students2Science.org, a chemistry lab in East Hanover devoted to STEM education. While on this trip each student was able to experience the use of several techniques and types of instrumentation commonly used in an analytical chemistry testing environment. Students were able to determine how polymers are formed and why recycling is so important. They were engaged in analyzing different strengths of sunblock and how this affects the UVA and UVB blocking technology. Many students got to perform a titration analysis of common antacids to see how they neutralize acid in the stomach. Finally, each student was challenged with determining how endothermic and exothermic reactions can apply to the everyday use of ice packs. The chance to be part of a real lab environment and learn from experienced professionals gave thyestudents a taste of how meaningful and rewarding the study of chemistry can be.
