Ma’ayanot Yeshiva High School—in conjunction with Black Box Studios—announces its Spring Drama Club production, the intense, riveting drama, The Grapes of Wrath to be performed at 7:30 p.m. on March 23 and March 24 at Ma’ayanot, 1650 Palisade Ave., Teaneck. Tickets, available in advance, are $10 each.
Based on John Steinbeck’s novel, this award-winning adaptation by Frank Galati enjoyed a Broadway run in the ’90s. This adaptation was preceded by a famous movie adaptation created in 1940, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda. Additionally, there was both an opera adaptation and a mash-up show by the Illegitimate Players Theater Company in Chicago in 1990, combining The Grapes of Wrath with Of Mice and Men.
This new production is directed by Matt Okin and student directed by Ma’ayanot senior Naima Hirsch. This is the third collaboration between Okin and Hirsch, following last year’s Street Scene by Elmer Rice and 2013’s A Few Good Men by Aaron Sorkin. Shoshana Dimbert is the Assistant Student Director, with tech and stage management provided by students Shalhevet Abenaim, Hannah Buhasira, and Becky Schwartz. Set design is by area professionals Frank Avellino and Gerard Bourcier. The Grapes of Wrath is produced in special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service of New York.
Ma’ayanot’s production of The Grapes of Wrath features a cast of 21 students of all grade levels, including: Racheli Blech, Ma’ayan Brandwein, Shoshana Dimbert, Shayna Dulitz, Tali Felner, Chana Ingber, Shaina Joseph, Emily Kanarek, Shoshana Klein, Leora Kohn, Devora Krischer, Sarah Lichtenstein, Kira Paley, Meira Prager, Ariella Rand, Sara Schapiro, Dora Schecter, Leah Stone, Doreet Wiesel, Dena Winchester, and Chava Zakheim.
