A Deep Dive Into Therapy With Psychotherapist Benjamin Steinig

Benjamin Steinig

What inspired you to become a therapist?

I’ve always been fascinated by what makes people tick—like a detective, but for feelings (and with fewer trench coats). Over time, I realized that being a therapist let me combine my natural curiosity with my love of deep conversations and helping people through life’s tangles. Therapy, to me, is like emotional gardening: we dig, we plant, we grow—and I get to help people bloom (without getting actual dirt under my nails).

What kind of therapy do you practice, and how would you describe your approach?

My style is kind of like your favorite pair of jeans: supportive, flexible and tailored to fit you. I pull from cognitive-behavioral therapy, structural family systems and, lately, a sprinkle of psychoanalysis, depending on what’s most helpful. I work collaboratively, always aiming to balance compassion with practicality. It’s therapy with heart and a game plan.

What types of issues do you typically work with?

I work with people facing anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions and relationship ups and downs—basically, all the greatest hits of being human. I especially love working with families, couples and parents. And here’s a little secret: therapy isn’t just for when things are falling apart. It’s also for when you’re wondering, Am I thriving… or just really good at Googling symptoms?

What can someone expect during their first session with you?

Think of the first session as a “get-to-know-you” coffee date—minus the coffee (unless you bring your own). I’ll ask questions about what’s going on, your background and what you’re hoping for. It’s also your time to ask me things, feel out the vibe and decide if we’re a good match. My goal is to help you feel safe, seen and a little less nervous about opening up.

Are there any common misconceptions about therapy?

Oh, plenty! One big myth is that therapy is only for people in full-on crisis mode. Nope. Therapy is for anyone who wants to grow, heal or just figure out why they keep texting their ex during Mercury retrograde. Another misconception? That therapists just sit there and say, “Hmm.” I promise I’m much more interactive than that! I reflect, guide and support you in finding your answers (and yes, I talk back).

How can someone know if therapy is working?

It’s not always fireworks and “aha” moments, though those are fun when they happen. More often, it’s subtle shifts: feeling less overwhelmed, having clearer boundaries, or realizing you didn’t spiral after that awkward Zoom meeting. Progress is personal, and checking in about what’s helping—or not—is a regular part of our work together. Growth looks different on everyone. Spoiler: no one gets it “perfect.”

How can people get in touch with you or learn more about your practice?

My team and I offer telehealth sessions, so you can show up in your most put-together outfit or your favorite hoodie—either way, no judgment. You can connect with us through our website at stepsandstages.net or give us a call at 347-878-1565. We also offer a free initial consultation so you can ask questions, get a feel for the fit, and decide if we’re the right match—kind of like therapy speed dating, but with way less small talk.

We accept several major insurance plans. For private-pay clients, we offer a clear fee structure and possibility of a sliding scale. We’ll walk you through all of it during the consult—no surprise bills or fine-print drama.
