Thank you, Rabbi Applebaum (“A Modest Proposal for LGBTQ Jews,” April 22, 2021), for your courage in publicly acknowledging the pain and suffering caused by those passages in Kedoshim. For too long, these passages have been used to shame our Jewish (and non-Jewish) brethren who were created by our loving God, in His image. Hashem’s perfect Torah has been cited to justify the religious and societal shunning of the estimated 5% of humanity who—through no choice of their own—were born with this unalterable sexual orientation. As Rabbi Applebaum noted, we must accept the prohibition against a particular homosexual act as outlined in Kedoshim, but his proposal is absolutely consistent with the Torah’s juxtaposed commandments of …V’ahavta l’rei’acha… and Lo Sonu…. Only someone who is not homosexual—or who does not have a homosexual loved one—could take offense at this “modest” acknowledgement of the pain caused by our imperfect understanding and application of Hashem’s perfect Torah.
