A Physician Deserving of High Praise

Dear Dr. Neugut,

I read with much joy your article about Dr. Gabrilove (“Simon & Garfunkel Part III: Janice Gabrilove and G-CSF,” July 4, 2024). I am the husband of one of her leukemia patients, and I wanted to add another angle to your article by showering more praise on her, from the patient point of view.

Dr. Gabrilove lifted my wife’s spirits daily and helped her navigate three years of treatment with love, care and kindness. Unfortunately, that is becoming rarer in a profession where physicians are often pressed for time and rush through appointments, and high grades are favored over personality. Fortunately, Dr. Gabrilove possesses both intelligence and personality in abundance. My wife, who became ill 18 years ago, is well today in large part because of Dr. Gabrilove.

As the article mentions, the success of G-CSF allowed use of higher doses of chemotherapy, not just for blood cancers, but for many types of cancer, and therefore saved millions of lives around the world. I know no better criteria for nomination for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
