Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

A Plea From Across the River

Living in Washington Heights, it’s a rare adventure to “cross the bridge” to New Jersey. I’m grateful to The Jewish Link for the weekly opportunity to keep up with the news from other locales and particularly touched by all the chesed, notably your recent features about the efforts of Bassie Taubes (“What Would Rabbi Sacks Want Me to Do?” November 4, 2021) and Jody Shukovsky (“Clothes for the Body and Soul,” January 6, 2022).

This has given me much chizuk on my own quest in advance of a trip to El Salvador next month. The rabbi of the small Jewish kehilla there asked if, among other basics like over-the-counter medications and toothpaste, I could bring 10-15 Chromebooks (used, refurbished, or new) to help provide the youth with the types of educational opportunities (and Zoom access!) that we take for granted. So far, I’ve received three devices. I turn to the people “me-ever haNahar” in the lands of Teaneck, Bergenfield and beyond, and to the cities that lie to the North (White Plains, New Rochelle, Stamford, etc.) to dig deep into their cabinets and drawers for a Chromebook they are no longer using, and of course welcome Venmo gifts to help purchase the remainder.

Thank you to you and your readers.
