A Selichot Experience At The Water’s Edge

Teaneck—For the first time in its history, the Jewish Center of Teaneck, 70 Sterling Place, will hold Selichot services, the penitential prayers recited in preparation for the High Holy Days, outside of the synagogue. On Saturday night, August 31, an all-white, end of the Hebrew month of Elul, end of the summer celebration of religious renewal will take place in the new section of Overpeck Park near the amphitheater, on the terrace overlooking the water. The evening will start at 9:30P.M with Havdalah, the ceremony marking the close of the Sabbath, and continue with a reception which will be followed at 10:30 p.m. by the Selichot service led by Rabbi Lawrence S. Zierler.

Because white, as a symbol of purity, is the color associated with the High Holy Day period, participants are requested to wear at least one white garment or all-white, if possible.

Directions to the location of the Selichot program can be obtained by calling the Center office at (201) 833-0515, ext. 200 or on its website www.jcot.org in the Calendar of Events section. The site has ample parking and is handicap accessible. An indoor location is available in case of rain. Jackets are necessary as the area can be breezy.

The Jewish Center of Teaneck is a Modern Orthodox synagogue, under the leadership of Rabbi Lawrence S. Zierler, with daily, Shabbat and holiday services. For more information about facilities, programs and opportunities for learning, please call the Center office at (201) 833-0515, ext. 200 or visit its website at www.jcot.org.
