How, if possible, can we keep the Shabbos candles burning after we’ve initially lit them? That is the burning (pun intended) question that has stymied generations of Jewish women throughout the millennia. Upon lighting the candles, most often, the wicks will burn for a short while, flicker, and then extinguish themselves. A brief, albeit annoyance.
Well, after extended testing, within my own family as well as the few I’ve shared this with, it appears we finally have a solution. Rather than prolong the suspense with superfluous verbiage, I’ll get right to the method.
Prior to lighting, merely cut the wick so that it is about 1/8th – 1/4 inch in length. Light the candles and voila, they will stay lit, they will burn evenly down to the base, without creating a cascade of melted tallow down the sides of the candles, candlesticks, etc.
Should you venture to give this a try, I’d love learning of your experiences, via these pages. Thank you.
