(Courtesy of Six13) Six13, the groundbreaking Jewish a cappella group known for its innovative and entertaining musical creations, including “Bohemian Chanukah,” recently released their highly anticipated Chanukah video, “A Wicked Chanukah.”
Set to iconic tunes from Broadway staple and current silver screen blockbuster “Wicked,” this year’s video offers a fresh and heartfelt retelling of the Chanukah story. With their signature harmonies, clever lyricism and dazzling visuals, Six13 delivers a moving tribute that resonates with today’s audience. The video thoughtfully incorporates references to the ongoing struggles faced by our brothers and sisters in Israel, adding a timely and poignant layer to the holiday celebration.
In tune with the challenges the Jewish people have faced over the past 14 months, the song begins on quiet stage with the acknowledgment, “This year has changed our history; we’ll never be the same,” depicting families of Israeli hostages, followed by a strong message of pride and resilience both today and citing the original history of Chanukah (“Defining Destiny/Defiant Maccabees). The video then shows a modern celebration in which Six13 members walk their own Glinda and Elphaba, and even pink and green adorned children in the community through Chanukah paralleling the way original Glinda shows Elphaba how to be popular. Whether it’s Jewish pride, resilience or holiday cheer, the video has something for everyone.
“The parallels between their story, the ancient one we celebrate, and the ongoing struggle we endure today—fighting against the odds, overcoming oppression and vilification—are not lost on us,” the band wrote about the video.
Eitan Hiller, tenor and Teaneck resident, told The Jewish Link of the inspiring feedback the group has received: “This has been a very busy Chanukah season for us, and we wanted to make sure that this year’s big Chanukah video had a powerful message. Performing this song live around the world and hearing the audience’s emotional response has been incredibly heartwarming.”
Although Six13 mostly meets in Manhattan, all filming took place in Bergen County where multiple members are proud to call home. Theatre scenes were filmed at the Jewish Center of Teaneck, and the Chanukah party was filmed at a home in Teaneck’s “Country Club” area.
