This week, fifth grade students have been busy learning about astronomy and the moon! They learned that the moon’s phases are caused by its orbit around the earth, that the moon cycle repeats about every 28 days, that it does not make its own light, only reflects it—and that the moon is smaller than the sun but appears the same size because it’s closer. The best part of this week’s science lesson was that you could actually eat it! The Oreo cookie moon phases activity was a great way to learn how to match a moon phase name with a moon phase appearance, and students had a blast.
