As part of the planets of the Solar System unit in the fifth grade science curriculum, the students each completed a research report detailing information about one of the planets. Their reports included the origin of the planet’s name, its location in the Solar System, its physical characteristics including size, atmospheric composition and gravitational force, as well as the NASA probes that have explored the planet and what information has been obtained through those probes. This research paper allowed students to utilize the different methods of research that are available to them including print and internet and become an expert on their planet. The students created a presentation for their classmates as well as a planetarium experience which displayed pictures, handmade models and facts about each planet for the fourth grade class. Each visitor to the planetarium left with a souvenir booklet that had a hand drawn stamp and facts of each planet in the Solar System.
