(JNS) On July 1, Ethiopian-Israeli Solomon Tekah was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer in Kiryat Haim. Upon hearing the news, over a thousand Ethiopian Jews began to protest on grounds of racial injustice; after the victim’s funeral, the protests morphed into violent demonstrations, leading to 136 arrests and injuries sustained by over a hundred officers. After reviewing footage of the event, officials confirmed that the off-duty officer shot the ground to protect himself from a threatening group of people, but the bullet ricocheted into the chest of Tekah.
