Tip #8 of 52 From Gun For Hire: (Step 5) I’m Ready to Apply for My Carry License Online
Applying for your carry permit in New Jersey can be broken down into a 5-step process. Follow along the next few weeks where we break down each step. From getting your Firearms ID card, choosing the right gun for you, to shooting the qualification course. Each step is also broken down on our website GunForHire.com/NJCCW. If at any point you have questions, please send an email to: [email protected] or stop in Gun For Hire any time we are open.
Below is Gun For Hire’s 5-Step process to carry:
Step 1: I need to apply for a FID Card and/or Pistol Purchase Permit. (See Tip #4 from July 25, 2024)
Step 2: I need to determine and purchase the right pistol I would like to carry. (See Tip #5 from August 1, 2024)
Step 3: Before I qualify, I’d like lessons or to practice with my carry gun. (See Tip #6 from August 8, 2024)
Step 4: I need to shoot the qualification course. (See Tip #7 from August 15, 2024)
Step 5: I’m ready to apply for my carry license online.
This week we are discussing Step 5:
Step 5: I’m ready to apply for my carry license online.
Before sitting down to begin the online application, you will need three things:
- A Square photo: Using your phone, change the settings to a 1:1 ratio, and take either a selfie, or have someone take your photo on a light background. You can upload this photo to your computer for easy access when you apply.
- Your Training Certificate: Using your phone, take a photo, front and back, of your SP182 Training Certificate you received after you qualified. You can upload this photo to your computer for easy access when you apply.
- References: You will need the name, address, phone number and email address of four references. These references cannot be related to you by blood or law, or anyone you live with (i.e., roommates). Your references will receive an email survey to fill out on your behalf. References do not need to live in New Jersey.
The actual application process is similar to the FARS system for FID cards and Pistol Purchase Permits. Upon submission, you will pay the $50 fee to the state, plus an $18 background check fee. You will also need to reach out to your town to see how they would like their $150 fee. Some towns offer the ability to pay online, others require money orders. Every town is different.
Once your application is submitted and paid for, your town will take the necessary time to review the application and approve your permit. Every town is different in terms of approval times.
