Ahavas Achim Offers Matan Bat Mitzvah Program, October – January

Congregation Ahavas Achim of Highland Park, New Jersey invites 6th and 7th grade girls and their mothers to participate in a very special learning opportunity during their bat mitzvah year.

Learning together in preparation for the bat mitzvah helps Jewish girls and their mothers to connect with Jewish sources in fresh and creative ways; to open new channels of communication; and to share the excitement of discovering their own place in the chain of Jewish continuity.

The Matan Bat Mitzvah Program is popular all over the world, and thousands of mothers and daughters have enjoyed the learning, which is themed “Jewish Women Through the Ages.” The program focuses on Jewish role models, from the imahot through modern-day heroines. At each meeting, the learning session is accompanied by an experiential activity such as music, theater, art or guided imagery. Each girl is encouraged to prepare a special project for her bat mitzvah on the subject “Aishet Chayil,” selecting a woman from Tanach or history, a family member or any other inspiring woman.

The Matan Program will be facilitated by Gila Miodownik, the rebbetzin of Congregation Ahavas Achim for the past 15 years. She is a physical therapist with over 17 years experience, a proud parent of two young adults and two teenagers, and a skilled facilitator who has run the Matan Program in prior years.

The Matan Program will meet in the Ahavas Achim Social Hall on the following Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m.:

  • October 26
  • November 2, 9, 16, 23
  • December 7, 14, 21, 28
  • January 4

Registration for this program is $100 per mother/daughter team to cover the cost of supplies and materials. Scholarships are available. Registration deadline is Monday, October 18, and a minimum of five mother/daughter pairs is required in order to run this program.

For more information, please contact Gila at [email protected]. To register for the program, please send a check to Congregation Ahavas Achim, 216 South First Ave., Highland Park, with “Matan Bat Mitzvah Program” in the memo.
