An Open Letter to the Community from the Teaneck Mikvah Association

The Teaneck Mikvah Association has always prioritized the beauty, purity and sacredness of the mitzvah of mikvah, while striving to provide a secure and healthy experience for all of the women who use our facilities. The mikvah’s physical design and the manner in which it is operated are predicated upon the sacrosanct principles of privacy and modesty.

That is why we believe that it is important for you to know that our Mikvah facilities are run by women, managed by women and staffed by women. We have an administrator and other staff on site and the facility is rarely left unattended during business hours.

Our Mikvah facilities are locked at all times and only limited individuals have access. Our key system is electronic and records the time and identity of all individuals who enter the building, and these records can be and are reviewed. There are security cameras around the periphery of the building properties and we are vigilant in monitoring them.

Nevertheless, in light of the recent distressing news and out of an abundance of caution, the following additional steps have been taken, in consultation with and encouragement of our local rabbanim, members of the RCBC:

1. An independent security firm was hired to conduct a sweep of our facilities. The buildings were deemed secure and nothing suspicious was discovered.

2. From now on, men who come to service or inspect the Mikvah facilities will be accompanied by a staff or board member.

We recognize that the operation of the Teaneck Mikvah Association is a responsibility and a privilege. We look forward to continuing the service to our community in the most dignified way befitting of the holiness of the mitzvot involved.
