Appreciate Our Country; Commemorate Memorial Day

Rabbi Helfgot’s letter to the editor (“Let’s Honor Those Who Defend Our Country,” May 11, 2023) was an important message to our community. As Jews, we must continue to show our appreciation to this wonderful country by attending events that commemorate Memorial Day. This demonstrates our appreciation to the memory of America’s war dead and our embrace of the ideals of freedom and equality. Let us not forget that the Jewish community also lost service members in combat such as US Army Staff Sergeant Shaya Libhaber, HY”D, my great uncle, who was one of several Jewish Americans killed in Europe during World War II.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the annual Bergenfield Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 29, starting at 1:30 p.m.. The parade begins at Cooper’s Pond on West Church St., turns left onto Prospect Ave, travels down S. Prospect Ave and then turns left on New Bridge Rd where it ends at Veterans Memorial Park.
