Art Is a Collaboration at RPRY

Debby Waldman’s third grade artists began their art journey this school year by working in teams and collaborating on large scale painted murals. Each team “owned” particular shapes: circles/ovals, triangles or squares and rectangles. Each artist worked with a particular color. With classical music playing, artists painted their designated shapes, changing sizes and locations in discussion with teammates. With musical cues, artists changed tables and or paint colors continuing their shape creations on each of the murals. Patterns and additional shapes were later added as discussions about “what was needed here and there” took place. The finishing touches were spectacular!

Collaborative projects help to foster cooperation as each team works toward a common goal. Teachers often see natural leaders emerge, as well as serious planners. Moreover, ideas are generated and decisions are made while moving about and having lots of fun.
