The Asher Strobel Memorial Tournament had its 11th annual gathering this past Sunday on the campus of The Frisch School. Run by Asher’s friends for the first eight years, the tournament raised over $8000 for charity. In 2021, after it was toned down by COVID, my friends and I took over the organization and we are well on our way to building it back up. Thousands were raised for tzedakah this year. We had 16 teams participating. The team composed of Eli Gartenberg, Jared Stein and Jack Turell won bragging rights over Zev Samet, Moshe Cohen and Aryeh Halpert.
It was a successful day because it was just a bunch of friends getting together, playing some great 3-on-3 ball with some great gear to take home and enjoy. The funds raised are in memory of my brother אשר דוב בן ראובן אפרים who was a light unto everyone he met. He was a person who emanated love and kindness to everyone around him and would go the extra mile to make sure everyone felt comfortable in whatever they were doing. Asher knew exactly what to say and how to say it.
The money goes towards the Asher Strobel Leadership Program which enables high school seniors to enhance their connection to Judaism on a trip to Poland, through the East Hill Synagogue in Englewood.
