Asia’s Watermelon-Bread Trend Comes to Teaneck

Watermelon what? You read it right: The hottest trend to hit Taiwan and South Korea this summer is bakery-baked watermelon bread. Jimmy’s Bakery in Yilan County, Taiwan, has become an Instagram sensation with Jimmy’s beautifully dyed breads. Butterflake’s Richie Heisler is not far behind, as he’s been working vigorously to mimic the look of watermelon with deep pink and green food coloring and raisins as the “seeds,” in loaves of his classic white breads. (Those who don’t believe this is a “thing,” check out YouTube for “watermelon bread” for the video that has six million views.) The loaves sold at Butterflake last week didn’t have any special flavorings, so families might get a kick out of serving turkey sandwiches on the colorful bread. But Heisler isn’t done: There will be more watermelon excitement. In addition to watermelon cakes already adorning the display cases, “Next week maybe I’ll add real watermelon to flavor the bread,” Heisler said. The Jewish Link is not sure about this, Richie. Perhaps we’ll just have a loaf of your mouth-watering seeded rye.
