Good skincare goes hand in hand with beauty. Solène, Teaneck’s most in-the-know women’s boutique, is all about beauty, in its stunning hats and statement fascinators, and above all, in its clients. Beauty products, skincare, hosiery and accessories are all curated at Solène with the shared purpose of helping every woman look her personal best.
As a woman of any age steps into the well-appointed, fragrant storefront on Queen Anne Road, she will surely notice the beautifully presented and well-edited selection of the very best in cosmetics and skin-care items in addition to the unique, handmade hats that decorate the walls. Many of them are made by Omri Amar, Solène’s multi-talented proprietor.
Delia Gubelmann, Solène’s beauty consultant and a professional makeup artist, is passionate about skin care and her clients. While she loves recommending great products and creating new makeup looks for every day and special occasions, one of her most celebrated skills at Solène is eyebrow tweezing and shaping without painful hot wax. In fact, she’s staunchly against using hot wax on the skin, and especially not on brows. “The skin around the eyes is four times thinner than the rest of the body, making it more sensitive and prone to stretching and aging,” she said. “Constant pouring of hot wax and pulling around the brows can lead to premature aging of the skin.”
Beauty consultants have found that waxing actually creates trauma in the hair growth cycle as well, so that hair eventually learns not to grow in such places, creating bald patches. Never a good look! Instead, Gubelmann recommends a simpler, significantly less painful session of tweezing and trimming, and creating a beautifully sculpted set of brows that frame the face.
Above all, Gubelmann recommends not over-tweezing. “These days, full, natural brows are in and it’s best to learn to easily fill in where you are missing one hair rather than tweezing or waxing too much,” she explained. “If you have thin or non-existent brows, I can help with that too,” she added.
When filling in sparse brows, Gubelmann recommends allowing for growth for twice as long as normal, with no tweezing, waxing or threading, to stimulate growth and allow them to rejuvenate. The growth cycle, she added, usually lasts 28 days, so you never really get the same growth each month. That extra time in between will give you fuller growth.
“They’re sisters, not twins,” joked Gubelmann about brows, noting she spends at least 10 to 15 minutes with each client to ensure everyone’s brows look great and frame the face well. Because of Amar’s confidence in Gubelmann’s skills, for a limited time Solène is offering everyone’s first brow tweezing experiencing free. Reservations are requested as availability is limited and Gubelmann does get booked quickly.
While you wait for your appointment, make sure to browse the makeup, haircare and skincare lines that Solène carries, such as Smashbox, Bare Minerals, Becca, RMS Beauty, Kevyn Aucoin, Eve Lom, Mario Badescu, Peter Thoma Roth, Fekkai, Briogeo and Deva Curl, to name a few. “Come in for a new look for the new year,” said Amar.
