(Andrew Friedman/TPS) Prosecutors said the unanimous conviction of Elor Azaria for manslaughter “speaks for itself,” but defense attorneys criticized a military court they said was “clearly hostile” to the defendant, and said they would appeal the ruling within 48 hours.
“There is no question that the evidence in this case points to a different outcome, and we will definitely appeal the decision. But it is a very sad day,” said Eyal Besserglick, a member of Azaria’s defense team.
Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman also said he was “unhappy” about the conviction of IDF Sgt. Elor Azaria, but he called on all Israelis to accept and respect the verdict.
“Whether you liked the decision or—like me—you were disappointed, we all must respect and honor the decision,” Lieberman told reporters.
Lieberman also called on public officials to stop attacking the defense establishment, and especially IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot, who Lieberman said works “day and night, seven days a week” and has contributed much to the country.
“The attacks on the army and on the chief of staff are simply out of order,” Lieberman said. “We must keep the army out of and above any political argument. We must keep the army and the defense establishment away from disagreements and keep it within the widest possible consensus of Israeli society.”
