BCHA Upper School Students Learn About Inertia

The Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy upper school science classes are learning all about the law of inertia. In Dr. Paul Castle’s class, they are learning that seat belts in vehicles are a practical response to Newton’s first law of motion, otherwise known as the law of inertia. In the lab, BCHA upper school students used dynamic tracks and carts to investigate inertia. They placed Lego “passengers” onto their carts and used a falling weight and pulley system to simulate a crash. They observed what happened to the passenger when the cart suddenly stopped. Then they repeated the experiment using a rubber band as a seatbelt for the passenger, and noted the difference in outcome for the passenger.
