This past week the Bergen County High School of Jewish Studies partnered with NCSY for a tikkun olam trip to New Orleans. The purpose of the trip was to work with Habitat for Humanity, to contribute to the ongoing rebuild of neighborhoods destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and to bring energy efficient light bulbs to homes in need of affordable lighting through Project Green Light. Whether painting trim, raking a backyard or installing a light bulb, the students put on finishing touches that would welcome people home to a better life. The trip left a profound impact on the students. In the evenings, they toured the French Quarter, listened to a jazz concert and ate New Orleans famous beignets.
