Ben Porat Yosef Students Measure Up

“Mr. Fischman has a model train set. In the model, there are nine street lamps placed at equal intervals along a 64 inch long footpath. How far is the fourth street lamp from the seventh?” This is a math question posed to BPY third grade students. To help her students calculate the solution to this problem, Morah Stephanie gave them a choice of different measurement tools to model the problem and figure out how to go about finding a solution. The experience reinforced the concept that length is additive. It also encouraged the students to learn how to employ their own creativity in order to find answers to problems, an approach that will serve them in all subject areas.
