When Ben Small of Englewood, a rising junior at SAR, and his mom recently engaged in spring cleaning projects, they soon realized that their discarded household materials and those of their neighbors could be used in an environmentally friendly way. Through recommendations, they got in touch with the environmental agency HELPSY, which collects small household items, lightly used toys and games and clothing, and recycles them through environmentally friendly processes. Last year alone, HELPSY collected more than 25 millions pounds of recyclables. Through their efforts, 320 million pounds of CO2emissions were prevented, 20 million gallons of water were saved and the electricity usage equivalent to 10,000 American homes was saved. HELPSY creates cleaner homes, puts less strain on a municipality’s sanitation industry and prevents the destruction of millions of pounds of goods.
In an effort to assist HELPSY in helping the environment, Small and his family will be sponsoring a car parade on the campus of The Moriah School, located at 253 South Woodland Avenue in Englewood, to facilitate donations to the organization. Contributors are invited to the school’s campus this Sunday, June 14, from noon to 3 p.m., to drop bagged donations of household goods from within their cars, while masked and maintaining social distancing. The goods will be taken by HELPSY to recycling stations to help keep the environment safer and cleaner.
